One of the biggest reasons for creating MommyLuvs2save was to create a community of moms and dads who want to help their family save money when buying essentials in order to free up money for debt repayment. My own family has paid off over $111,500 in consumer debt including credit cards, student loan debt and 2 vehicles. I am a teacher at heart. I want to use the skills that I have learned to help YOU ditch debt. I want to encourage each of you in your efforts so that one day you can feel the freedom of being debt free. I’m not quite there yet either (we still have a mortgage) so I need encouragement as well
It can be very difficult to pay down debt. There are many temptations to spend money. We live in a culture that encourages debt and spending. In addition, expenses come up and there never seems to be any extra money for paying down debt. I want to urge each of you to participate in a challenge. Just leave a comment about one positive step you’ve taken for your family each day. Did you eat in instead of going out? Did you save money at the grocery store? Did you pay extra on your credit card? Leave a comment below and we will cheer one another on every day and every step of the way.
The challenge is to leave a comment about what YOU have done to work on getting debt free each day. One winner will be chosen to win a $25 Amazon gift card at the end of each month. To participate in the challenge you must comment on at least 10 posts during the month.
* I will also be sharing my progress from the day prior.
My Progress: I felt somewhat better yesterday, so it was time to get back into my routine 🙂 Okay after getting the girls on the bus I did take a little nap, which I usually don’t do, but I wasn’t 100% better, so it was healing, right ? I did make myself head out the door to do a little “freebie gathering”. I started out at Dunkin’ Donuts. I have a card for a free iced tea every Monday for the next 5 weeks or so. I picked that up. Next I went to pick up a huge bag of things from my favorite Freecycle friend. She gave me a new set of really nice glasses, which we were in need of . She also gave me some cereal and a few candles. I headed over to Bath & Body Works next to pick up the free lotion that I posted about yesterday. My last stop on the freebie journey was to stop at 7Eleven for a free diet cherry Slurpee (free via the App). The Slurpee tasted exactly like cherry Nyquil and I should know because I took some over the weekend. So if you think a FREE cherry Nyquil Slurpee tastes good, check the App for it. I threw mine out because even though it felt good on my poor throat I couldn’t stand the taste 🙁
I did pretty well with Swagbucks yesterday. I earned 159, which was pretty good for not feeling 100%. I listed a few items on Ebay. I bought a baby shower gift on Ebay. I paid for it with a credit from Paypal. I did some cleaning yesterday too and cooked all meals at home. We had chicken fajitas for dinner. I had chicken and veggies (see below).
I wanted to let you know about something I’m working on that’s not debt related. If you’ve followed my site for any amount of time you know I’ve been trying to lose a little (make that lot) of weight. I’ve tried many diets including Weight Watchers (lost 40) and green smoothies among other things. While I’ve kept off 30 of the 40 I lost at WW, I still have lots to lose. Well my little sister has been having a lot of success by cutting carbs (not all the way, but dramatically). Now I have to tell you that that is the ONE thing I’ve never been willing to do to lose weight. I mean seriously, why even get up if you can’t have toast for breakfast and a sandwich for lunch ?? Honestly though, it’s the one thing I haven’t tried.
I decided to give myself “The Month of March”. I decided this on February 28th – leave it to me to wait until the last minute ha ha. I am giving myself one PERFECT month to see how much I lose if I do the one thing I’ve never been willing to do – cut carbs. Now I know you can’t cut them all the way, but I am drastically reducing them. My sister and I are going to weigh in at the end of the month to see how much we lose. Hopefully I can make this change until I lose all of the weight I want to lose, but I figured I could at least do a month. I wasn’t supposed to get weighed until the end of the month, but I decided to weigh in yesterday (just to make sure all of the torture was working for me – don’t tell my sister ha ha). Well, guess what ?? I have lost 12.4 pounds in 10 days. I SO am encouraged and I am getting used to this new way of eating. I’ll let you know my total for the whole month when we weigh in “legitimately” 🙂
I am sharing this because I think it applies to debt too. You could set up your own challenge for April. What is the ONE thing that you haven’t been willing to do or give up in order to reach your goal ? Trying doing it for the month of April and document how much money you saved/paid off by doing it. They say doing something new for a month makes a new habit – here’s hoping !
What did you do? Leave a comment We’d love to hear about it You could make 2014 your year. Who will the March winner be ? We’ll see…
